A Rose: Every Day in October... 2010

Last year I produced a collection of Rose images: Oil, Acrylic, Photography, Ornaments... all inspired by my friend, Melissa. This year I will do the same... a rose every day in the month of October. Each new image will be available for purchase... with proceeds going to a fund for Breast Cancer Awareness, and free Mammograms to those without insurance.

I hope you will show your support and enjoy these roses... In honor of all those who we know,... who have lived, survived, and endured this horrible disease.

I have been collecting Rose images over the past year to be inspiration for my upcoming October rose project... so here are just a few images that I am going to start with.

Working hard on new Rose and Floral Paintings and Pastels.

I've just completed a series of rose studies in oil pastel.... chalk and watercolor are next on the list, and then I will open up the palette and begin some plein-air roses...

Again, all images that have a pink rose in them, proceeds will go toward the cost of mamograms for women who would otherwise miss this neccessary preventative treatment. As I was away for the weekend I didn't get much time to paint or create new rose images... but, I did visit some of my photo archives for inspiration for some new pieces. Of course, my white roses have always been a love of mine... so this white rose spray will undoubtedly be painted again and again... Those clusters of blooms are just amazing... The second image is a close-up from another painting - the colorful garden paintings that suggest abundant rose gardens and sprays of colorful flowers are always a joy to paint... Again, the pink roses have always had a special place for me, and every one I paint is with Love for Melissa and other women who have been affected by Breast Cancer. Each new rose I paint is in honor of a woman, who has lived and battles Breast Cancer. In for them I continue to support and promote the need for Early Breast Cancer Detection, and encourage me to educate and spread need to help women, and those who are close to them get checked on a regular basis.

A Rose Every Day in October. I have challenged myself to produce new pieces of artwork that include roses... Today I put some acrylic paint onto small canvases. Here is a trio of pink roses on a 4" x 6" canvas board. I will add more pictures of these pieces as the paint dries. :) These small floral images are also available as note cards.

I have always been fond of roses. Pink roses, red roses, yellow roses, the beautiful painted coats that my mother has in her garden... and the combination of white, yellow and pink that are in my own front garden. As an artist I analyze the folds of each petal, each shade of color, and occasionally the butterfly or bee that is investigating what is inside. As a tribute to the women I know, and those I don't know, that have suffered, battled, confronted, survived and lived with Breast Cancer, and those that have not survived the fight... I paint roses. In a simple way to honor their challenge, show my support and promote the need for more education, awareness and of course a cure... so I simply share this... Paintings in the "Simply Roses" or "The Melissa Project" collections are available for purchase, and 50% of the sale will go to the Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness (early detection and awareness)... Why the Melissa Project? I'm not one to sit around and let the world go on around me... I've got to do something.

About a year ago, a girl friend of mine from college called me. We chat every few months and rarely see each other as happens when people move and get married, as I did, and we loose track of some people… but last summer Melissa called me and informed me that she had been battling breast cancer. I nearly dropped my cell phone as I stood in Target (one remembers everything when receiving such a call) I held my baby daughter in my arms, and grabbed a piece of paper from my mother to get a number to call her back on. I was suddenly shuffling thoughts of sadness, despair, and my boys (4 and 2 at the time of this phone call), and in a flash I had guilt and concern and other streams of emotion… what was I supposed to say… then I’m listening intently while Melissa tells me she elected to have a mastectomy and is now undergoing chemotherapy. I want to help but being miles away, what can I do but listen?

When I returned home, I called Melissa and chatted a little while, just listening and letting her tell me what she wanted to tell me. She had conducted a self-breast exam and found something unusual, got it checked out to find that it was indeed cancerous. I don’t know much more than that, but it made me seek information and become an advocate for early detection and educating young women, old women, all women, and the men, family and friends of all women to become aware and supportive of ALL WOMEN. I sensed loneliness in my friends voice… and that makes me want to do more.

I have started THE MELISSA PROJECT: a collection of art and design to educate women, and those that love them, on the benefits of early detection, and the support to get through it all. It is still in its infancy and conceptual phase, but the collection will include: original artwork, prints, jewelry, and other suitable handcrafted items and collectibles that will bring the PINK cause to the forefront. Money generated from THE MELISSA PROJECT will go to support various non-profits who provide services, medical and supportive, to the women and families who are surviving breast cancer, and education for early detection. It’s just a start.
